Triple Strand Akoya Pearl Necklace

If you are looking for a gift to make someone special feel like royalty, a triple strand Akoya Pearl necklace is the way to go. Pearl jewelry has long been the choice of kings and queens. In fact, at one time it only royalty could legally wear Pearls. In 1692 the Duke of Saxony drafted a law prohibiting commoners from wearing pearls because he wanted to restrict their use to nobility.

Legend has it that Cleopatra drank a pearl cocktail to win a bet with Marc Antony.

One of the most famous pearls in the world La Pelegrina was passed on through many queens and kings. In 1660 King Philip of Spain gifted the pearl to his daughter Maria Theresa for her marriage to Louis XIV. The pearl re-appeared in Russia in 1683. The Crown Jewels were stolen by rioters in 1792, and this may be how the jewels found their way to Russia. While in Russia, the pearl was owned by the nobles from the House of Yusupov.

La Pelegrina is not to be confused with another pearl known by a similar name, La Peregrina. La Peregrina which means pilgrim or wanderer in Spanish has a rich history of being passed down for hundreds of years. King Philip II of Spain gave the pearl to his bride Mary I of England. After Mary's death the pearl remained in the Spanish Crown for the next 250 years. Many of the royals were painted wearing the necklace including Margaret of Austria, Queen of Spain, both wives of Philip IV, and Queen Elisabeth of France. The was owned by the Hamilton family in England until it was sold at Auction in 1969 at Sotheby's in London. The pearl was then purchased by Richard Burton who gave the pearl as a gift to Elizabeth Taylor.

Pearls have long been popular in the British monarchy. Queen Anne, the last British monarch of the Stuart family and Queen Caroline owned millions of dollars worth of pearls. Princess Diana was given a triple strand pearl necklace from the Spencer family on her 18th birthday. She was often seen wearing various strands of pearl necklaces and chokers. In April 2011 Queen Elizabeth wore a double strand pearl necklace to Prince William's wedding.

Pearls have long been a symbol of luxury. While you no longer have to be a member of royalty to own a pearl, you can make someone feel like they are by giving the gift of pearl jewelry. Pearl jewelry can be extremely pricey, but at Laguna Pearl you can find gorgeous high quality pearl jewelry for extremely reasonable prices. Laguna Pearl offers a wonderful selection of pearl jewelry to help you find the piece that is fit for your queen.
