Fun Facts about Tahitian Pearls
One of the most popular types of pearls today is called the Tahitian pearls. Whether you are buying a double strand necklace for yourself or a single strand necklace as a gift, these pearls are always a great choice. More and more people are choosing this type of pearls for their beauty, quality, and luster. Because of their popularity, there is now a surge in demand for these pearls which is why more farms are opening to serve that demand so availability isn’t that difficult compared to other types of pearls.
In shopping for Tahitian pearls, there are four things that you would want to keep in mind. These are listed below:
- These pearls do not come from Tahiti
Despite the name, they actually don’t come from Tahiti. This is a common misconception. The truth is, they are grown and harvested in the islands around the French Polynesian. They are named after Tahiti because quality control is done there. Here, each pearl is checked and ensured in terms of quality before being exported all over the world.
Although they don’t come from a single source, these pearls all come from one type of oyster called the pinctada margaritifera or more commonly known as the black-lipped pearl oyster.
- High Quality All the Time
Each of the Tahitian pearls harvested are checked one by one to ensure their quality. This is why they are usually found on the larger side of the spectrum. As a matter of fact, the common size range of these pearls range from 8mm to 14mm which is generally larger compared to others like the Akoya. At the same time, nacre thickness should at least be 0.8mm to pass quality control. If not, they are not exported outside of the country.
Because of the strict quality control, you can always be sure that you are getting high quality pearls with the Tahitian pearls.
- Unique Colors
When it comes to color, the Tahitian pearls are also very unique. You can only find black colored pearls in black-lipped pearl oysters. Other colors also commonly come from this type of oyster. This is why you have a lot of choices when shopping for these pearls. Colors that you can find include peacock, brown, grey, blue, and even green colored pearls. This diversity in color is one of the main reasons why this is one of the most popular types of pearl in the market today.
- Different Grading
Another thing to remember is that these pearls follow a different grading system compared to other pearls. Instead of using the A to AAA system, they use the A to D system with A being the highest quality and D being the lowest quality. For Tahitian pearls to be considered as an A, they should have an almost completely flawless surface. D grade on the other hand would only have about a 30% blemish free surface.
These are just some of the things to remember when shopping for Tahitian pearls. With these things in mind, you are assured that you get your money’s worth.
